| Dear Eytan,
Thanks so much for your kind words about my paintings. What I wrote in your guestbook was so minimal compared to our actual experience there. My husband and I were in Italy for 3 weeks with Pitigliano being one of our primary destinations. We had no idea what we would encounter and were completely enchanted with the village and surroundings. I've never seen anything like it before. The way the town organically rises from the earth is so magical. The shapes of the buildings, the quietness of the narrow streets with all of the lovely flowers planted everywhere amidst the stone houses. We are also secular Jews but as we travelled around Italy we continuously found ourselves 'accidentally' encountering the small Jewish ghettos in various towns. When we arrived in Pitigliano, a storm arose with intense thunder, lightening and rain just as we were walking by the entrance to "La Piccola Gerusalemme". So we decicded to go inside and it was amazing. Because of the storm the lights kept flickering on and off and sometimes we were in complete darkness in the underground cave rooms. It was a very beautiful and moving experience that I will always remember. Though we are not religious Jews, there is still a profound connection to being Jewish that is mysterious to me and that I treasure. I hope we will be able to go back someday and spend more time. Attached are 2 photos taken in Pitigliano. One is a photo of my husband sitting in the temple when we were there. (You may want to look at his website also, he's an interesting character. www.gregglevoy.com) Thanks for writing, Robin |
